1. If you were to watch a highlight reel of your life this past week,

  • What would you see? What did you spend most of your time doing?
  • Go a little deeper: What captured your heart? Were there particular areas in your life of discontent, frustration, worry, or doubt that preoccupied your thoughts or fueled the way you lived?
  • As you review your highlight reel, notice: Where was God in the picture? Who is at the center of your life and making the calls? Who sets the agenda? Is it God or you?
  • What image of God does your life reveal? Is it an accurate and faithful picture of who God is or is it a simplified or distorted caricature of his nature?

2. This distortion and the temptation to create your own identity apart from God, to live your own agenda is often a “smooth slope” away from Him. What are some ordinary ways that you think or live that slowly lead you away from God without your awareness?

3. What is one area where you wish things were different? What do you think would make it better? Instead of setting your own agenda to attain what you think is the better life, will you instead bring it to Him? Even if it sounds like complaining, will you lament your situation and confess how you have given in to Satan’s lies that God is not preeminent over all, present in your life and your protector in this situation? Confess the sins He reveals.

4. Which of these truths do you need to ask God to help you remember? How might believing these things are true help you in the midst of your discontentment or discouragement? Will you take a step of faith and express your trust in the Lord’s character in the midst of your pain, surrendering your own plans and trusting Him instead?
