“Self-control is the Spirit-enabled, word-guided ability to avoid excesses (or over-desires) and to stay within our God-given boundaries. Self-control allows us to cultivate the skill of living a thoughtful and a careful life in which we do what is right despite our desires.”—Allistair Begg

  • Explain how the gospel of grace saves us to self-control.
  • In what areas of your life do you want to grow in self-control? What desires are either excessive or have crossed over God-given boundaries? Are there areas you have tried to control but have given up because it is too hard?
  • What have you already tried? How successful have your efforts been? What worked? And what doesn’t?
  • How might meditating on God’s grace through Scripture help you in changing this? Are there particular truths that speak to this particular struggle? What benefits, not just losses, might come from exercising self-control in these areas?
  • How might you adjust your routines to help you to choose godliness?
