Word: How this truth should be understood
- Verses 13-16 comes after the beatitudes in vv. 3-12, a list of qualities that ought to characterize Jesus’ disciples. As Pastor Allen mentioned, we might nod along in agreement until we get to Jesus’ words about persecution in vv. 10-12. Why is it significant, then, that Jesus follows this up with a reminder that we are called to be salt and light in vv. 13-16?
- Salt and light would have been two commonly understood metaphors for their simple, yet significant uses in everyday life. What are some ideas that salt and light teach us about our responsibility as Christians in the world?
Worship: How this truth affects your heart
- Think about some of the different areas of your life (e.g. family, parenting, relationships, finances, school or work, free time and hobbies). In what ways are you tempted to conform to the world rather than to be distinct as salt and light?
- In v. 15, Jesus says it doesn’t make sense to light a lamp but conceal it under a basket so no one can see its light. In the same way, as Jesus’ disciples, we are called to let our light shine so that others may see our good works and be pointed towards God. What are some of the things that keep you from engaging others and making your faith known to them?
- In Matthew 5:10-12, Jesus says that we can expect others to respond negatively and even to persecute us for living as his disciples. But v. 16 says that some will respond positively and “give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” What are some examples of this that you’ve seen in your life or in others?
Work: How this truth works out in your life
- As we consider our own call to be lights that shine for Christ, it is important to remember that Jesus himself said in John 8:12, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” We’re not trying to create our own light, but to simply reflect and display Christ’s light in us. Therefore, one of the most important ways we can shine brightly is first by spending time with God. Are there any specific truths or passages that might help you to live as salt and light?
- Think of a relationship(s) or your spheres of influence where you want to be more intentional with living out Jesus’ call to be salt and light. Is there something you should do but haven’t yet? Or what is a first step that you can take?
