1 Peter Sermon Study: Session 9 (Fall 2022)

Session 9 – Small Group Study Guide

Word: How this truth should be understood

  1. In vv. 9-10, what does Peter do before calling his readers to “proclaim the excellencies of him…”? Why does he do this?
  2. In v. 9, Peter describes believers using four different descriptions. What are some of the ideas and implications captured in each of these?
  3. The word “excellencies” in v. 10 can be understood as “praises.” In other words, what we are called to proclaim are the “praises” of God who called us out of darkness into his marvelous light. Why is this significant?

Worship: How this truth affects your heart

  1. What are some of the identities that you live according to (e.g. parent, friend, employee)? In what ways are you tempted to make that identity more important than your identity in Christ?
  2. Of the four descriptors that Peter uses, which one stands out most to you and why? How does it address some of the specific hesitations, fears, or obstacles that you have when it comes to proclaiming the gospel? Write down one truth you can remind yourself of when you interact with unsaved friends or family.
  3. In order for us to faithfully proclaim the excellencies of Christ, we need to first be convinced of his beauty and worth for ourselves. What is a specific “excellency” or truth about Christ that you’ve personally experienced and want to continue to meditate on for your own worship?

Work: How this truth works out in your life

  1. Pastor Kim talked about how we proclaim a better Savior and a better story. What is your own personal story of how Christ saved you and how do you now see your life or circumstances differently?
  2. What are some aspects of your own story that you could use as entry ways to share the gospel with others?

Sharing and Prayer

  1. As you think about this season and our study in 1 Peter, what is one area in which you’d like to grow in living out your faith? Write this down and prepare to follow-up and track God’s work in our future sessions!
  2. What are some ways that you’d like to apply what you just learned to that one area you’d like to grow in living out your faith?
  3. Share other prayer requests.
