This prayer ends with a plea for protection from the evil one, not escape from our suffering, as that is the more serious concern. Pick the questions that are most helpful to you and take time to pray over it, using the requests in the Lord’s Prayer to guide your petitions.
1. Where do you recognize the spiritual battle in your life?
- Are there ways your suffering has become an opportunity for Satan to tempt and deceive you?
- Are there people you, for whatever reason, resent or refuse to love?
- Are there ways you see sin coming between you and your devotion to God?
2. Consider Col. 2:13-14. What has God done for you through Christ? Because Christ has taken the punishment we deserve, we have been forgiven a great debt.
Reflect on the parable of the unforgiving servant in Matt. 18:23-35. If you harbor unforgiveness, what does this reveal of your understanding of God’s forgiveness of you? What is Jesus’s warning?
Take time to repent of this is an issue that has been keeping you from your devotion to the Lord. Ask God to help you “forgive others their trespasses” as a response of thankfulness to God for forgiving you.
3. What enticements to sin are tempting you from today? Are there areas in your life you need to seek God’s forgiveness? What is Satan’s deceptive lie in this temptation or sin? How might giving in to these allow him to win this battle in your life? Take time to pray for the Lord’s protection in these situations.
4. How might you use the requests in the Lord’s Prayer to help you pray for a specific area of concern, suffering, temptation, or sin in your life?
