Welcome to Sunday Fuel! This series of questions is designed to assist your personal reflection and fellowship with others about the sermon from this past Sunday.
Go to This Sunday’s Sermon (start at 20:32)
[Author’s note: Sometimes music helps us meditate on truths as well. I’ve included the links to some of the worship songs we sang this week if this helps you.]
1. Identify an issue that makes you feel anxious or something you are discontent about. (It can be the same issue from last week’s message, if you wish.)
2. Pastor Kim mentioned some unhelpful ways that we tend to deal with our anxiety or discontent: justifying, isolating, and overthinking. Which one(s) most describes how you deal with your anxiety or discontentment? What does it look like in your situation? How well do these help you to grow spiritually or glorify Christ? How have they been detrimental instead?
3. One of the four encouragements mentioned in the message was the counterintuitive pathway of grace through repentance.
- In what ways are you justifying or excusing your worry?
- How is this actually declaring your lack of trust and minimizing the glory of God? How does this keep you from growing and experiencing the joy He desires for you?
- Will you confess your unwillingness to trust Him and how that distrust is sinful? Will you repent of your excuses and thank Him for His forgiveness?
- Pray that He will help you find hope in Him, not in the improvement of your circumstances.
4. Reflect on the truth of the gospel. How can your union with the Christ who sacrificed himself to draw near to you, save you, and restore you to fellowship with the Father, make a difference in your everyday life? Because of Him, you can know the God of peace is at hand (Phil. 4:5) and with you (v. 9). Take time to meditate on this truth. How does it help refocus your perspective on your anxiety or discontent? Meditate on Christ, your sure and steady anchor.
5. Instead of worrying or relying on yourself to make life better, what are some other ways you can come to Christ in faith with your burdens?
- What can you bring to Him in prayer, with thanksgiving?
- What truths can you meditate on (Phil. 4:8), to help bring clarity and warm your affections? (Don’t forget to sign up for the meditation seminar!)
- Who can you share your concerns with? What can you ask them to pray for you?
- Is there someone you can encourage, that you can remind one another to look to Christ in your challenges?
- What would it look like to place your trust in Christ’s faithfulness to you and rest in contentment in the God of peace? What would this look like as you walk with Him day by day?
