Welcome to Sunday Fuel! This series of questions is designed to assist your personal reflection and fellowship with others about the sermon from this past Sunday.
Go to This Sunday’s Sermon start at 17:05 for 9 AM baptisms. If you’d like to see the 11 AM baptisms, start at 14:24 for the devotional.
Read Psalm 115.
1. Reflect on verses 1-3. Begin your time reflecting on verse 1. Orient your heart towards God—He alone deserves glory for His steadfast love and faithfulness—a stark contrast to other gods whose blessings are fleeting and temporary at best.
2. Reflect on verses 4-8. What idols do you tend to lean on or trust? What benefits or blessings do they provide for you? In what ways do they help or protect you? Then consider: how do they fall short of God’s steadfast love and faithfulness? How do they fail you? Consider the sobering truth that trusting in all other gods will lead to nothing—we will become like them: dead.
3. Reflect on verses 9-11. Contrast these idols with the blessings of trusting in God. These verses remind us He is our help and shield, doing what other idols cannot. Reflect on how God has already helped us in regard to our inability to save ourselves from our sin. If He has provided help in our ultimate problem, how does this help you trust Him in your everyday problems?
4. Reflect on verses 12-18. After considering the contrast between the true and living God with false and dead idols, will you join in blessing God and praising Him? Take time to praise Him specifically for the ways He is so far better than the idols we tend to pursue.
