Welcome to Sunday Fuel! This series of questions is designed to assist your personal reflection and fellowship with others about the sermon from this past Sunday.
Recalling and meditating on God’s rich mercies to us gives us the fuel we need to breathe life into our faith, love, and service to God, even when we’re struggling. Christian suggested three ways to bring this from head knowledge to life connection:
1. Head: Take some time to reflect on the big picture mercies of God through the gospel.
- Read Romans 3:10-12—how does that describe who you are without Christ? What do we deserve?
- Read Romans 5:6-11. What has Christ done for us? What mercies has he shown to us as sinners?
Write these out to help you visualize what we deserve and how God has shown his mercy to us.
2. Heart: Take time to meditate on His mercies through the gospel and lead you to grateful praise.
- Is there one truth in particular that helps fan the flame and zeal in your heart?
- In addition to gospel mercies, consider how you have seen his smaller mercies given to you each day. What are some ways He has shown His particular mercies to you?
- Are there words, thoughts, and actions in your life that are not holy and acceptable to Him? Take time to confess them and offer yourself to Him in repentance.
3. Hands: As you ponder His mercies, how can you pivot from doctrine to duty? Consider one of the following to help you get started in finding a particular way for you to present yourself to God as a spiritual act of worship.
- Where in your life do you feel exhausted or burned out, even if they are good or important things? Or does a certain persistent sin leave you feeling defeated? How can the mercies you just meditated on fuel your heart for Him?
- How can we respond bodily as well as spiritually in worship? What might that look like for you to love Him with all of who you are?
- What sacrifice do you need to lay on the altar in this season of your life? Are there areas that we are keeping for ourselves and withholding from God? Will you surrender this to Him as an act of worship?
- How might your words, thoughts, and actions be holy and acceptable to Him? What are some changes you need the Holy Spirit to help you make, even if they are costly or require dying to yourself?
