Short-Term Missions: Uganda!

In September, Lighthouse will be sending a short-term missions team to Uganda to spend time at Good Shepherd’s Fold, an orphanage. Kim Lee, one of our members, served at Good Shepherd’s Fold for a year as a nurse and medical missionary. She and Brian Chang will be leading the team (eight from Lighthouse) from September 16 – September 23, 2016.

See their support letter below (or you can read it here):

Dear church family,

We’re excited that Lighthouse is able to send a team of 8 members to Uganda to serve at Good Shepherd’s Fold, where Kim Lee, a previous missionary from Lighthouse served as a nurse for a year. We will be serving from September 16 to September 23, 2016.

Good Shepherd’s Fold (GSF) is a Christian-based children’s home in the village of Buundo, Uganda, surrounded by sugar cane fields and mud hut houses. There are about 90 children, from newborns to 18 years old, who live at the children’s home. GSF’s focus is to minister to the orphans and destitute children in Uganda, and to share with these children the good news of Jesus Christ, as well as provide for their physical, spiritual, educational and medical needs.

GSF also ministers to the surrounding villages through their primary school, medical care, and mercy and outreach ministries. The director at GSF is also heavily involved in raising up and teaching local pastors and church leaders.

Our team hopes to be an encouragement to GSF, whether it’s helping with teaching, preaching, medical work, special needs ministry, village/mercy outreach ministry, or spending time with the children. A few of the men on the team will be doing a training conference for pastors and church leaders in Uganda.

This trip will also be a vision trip for some members who are thinking of doing long term missions, giving them a better understanding of long-term missions and what it looks like specifically to serve orphans, and a trip to learn how we can encourage and serve our long-term missionaries.

After Uganda, five of the team members will be able to spend a weekend encouraging and supporting Cory O’Yang, a current Lighthouse missionary in Ghana. We hope that through our trip our team will give glory to God and draw others and ourselves to love Him more, whether in Uganda, Ghana, during our travels, or back home in the states.

Our team covets your prayers! Please pray for us individually and as a team! And if you would like to financially support us, our team needs to raise enough to cover our travel and lodging costs.

  • Pray for safety abroad and logistics of the trip
  • Pray for preparation for training local pastors and church leaders
  • Pray that we would be an encouragement to GSF and Cory

And if you would like to financially support the team, we need ot raise around $20,000 by September 1 to cover travel and lodging costs. Please make out checks to Lighthouse Community Church, memo: Uganda 2016 and feel free to put it in the offering plate or send to: 501 Van Ness Avenue, Torrance, CA 90501. You can contact the church with any questions.

Blessings,

Brian Chang, Kristin Chang, Kim Lee, Ruthanne St. John, James Choi, Mat Pau, Garrett Shimata, Wendy Shimata
