After months of speaking in generalities about the design of our new building, we were so excited to finally get to unveil it to the church family during the one year anniversary of our Treasuring Christ Generosity Initiative! We had just a few moments to share the floor plan and some basic updates about the project, but there was simply not enough time to talk about everything.
But here in the comfort of this blog, we’ve got all the time in the world! Behold, our floor plan!
Over the next few weeks, we’ll slow down and walk through some of the significant spaces of the church building, as well as share about our aesthetic and material direction. But more than floor plans, furnishings, and finishes, we hope that we can remember that all of this is just a means to our ultimate end: to treasure Christ and to proclaim him to one another and to the world.
With that, let’s park, get out of the car, walk through the front door, and take our first steps into our Lobby.
The southeast corner of the lobby (roughly 1,900 square feet, or about a third of our current gym ) is set aside entirely for fellowship. So much discipleship happens over conversation, as brothers and sisters linger and speak the truth to one another in love. Our church family is built off of these kinds of intentional, slow interactions, but one of the pressure points we all feel in our current building is that it’s hard to find a place to do that!
The Fellowship Area in our new lobby is designed for exactly that: comfortable, flexible seating that invites you in and invites you to stay. And because food makes any conversation better, our after service snacks will be served in this same area!
God has also provided an ample outdoor yard that runs edge to edge of the south side of the building, and we are hopeful that that will be another key space for fellowship. Have you ever been to the Enclave on 190th? Yeah, something like that. We would love for our yard to feel like an outdoor living room where you’re tempted to stay just a little too long. Practically speaking, we’ll develop about half the yard in the initial build-out and finish the rest later. We’ll make sure it’s safe for the time-being, but pretty may have to come later.
The north section of the lobby will be a dedicated Welcome Area.
The goal for the Welcome Area is to be natural landing spot for newcomers, as well as anyone who just wants to meet a friendly, helpful face. We are accustomed to our well-used Welcome Desk in our current foyer, where you might find one of our deacons or a member of our Connections team, but we are weighing the right format for this new space. Another fixed desk? Freestanding tables? Bean bag chairs? All we know is that you will not be leaving your Lighthouse Sharing items at this new Welcome Area. Not that you do that now, right?
We’ll also host Coffee with a Pastor in this area, so anyone can easily find a pastor to talk to or a coffee to enjoy.
The number one question about the new building has been whether there will be more bathroom capacity. And the answer is yes! We have heard your toilet-based cries! There will be one set of men’s and women’s restrooms centrally located in the building, and we are maximizing what is possible in those spaces. The men’s room will have 3 toilets, 4 urinals, 3 sinks. The women’s room will 8 toilets, 4 sinks. Thank God.
Just off the lobby is a room for all the volunteers who make our church possible. We envision Volunteer Central to be a dedicated staging area for servants, with natural homes for our Walkie-talkies for the safety team, vests for ushers, gear for every ministry function that needs a home, personal cubbies so volunteers don’t have to carry their things through a full service. Light snack prep will happen here as well: coffee, donuts, and all the goodies we love serving on Sunday.
Next week: the sanctuary — 900 seats, natural light, and why we’re fans of the fan-shaped room.
