Welcome to Sunday Fuel! This series of questions is designed to assist your personal reflection and fellowship with others about the sermon from this past Sunday.
Go to This Sunday’s Sermon (start at 19:56)
Note: Though this sermon addresses parents, it is a call for all believers—including singles—to wisely consider how they will steward their influence for God’s kingdom and glory. Please apply these questions to those the Lord has brought into your life to influence—children, youth in your small group, those you counsel or disciple, etc.
1. Deut. 6:10-12 is a warning to the people to take care not to forget the Lord when they receive the blessings of the land. What are some blessings that the Lord has given you and your family?
2. Unfortunately, the generation Moses addresses did not choose to love the Lord with all their heart, soul, and might. As a result, they did not pass on the faith as Moses urged them to do in Deut. 6:4-9. If those you are called to disciple were to “read” the book of your life, what would they conclude is your greatest love, purpose, or motivation for living? In what ways have you fallen short of loving God with your whole life? Admit these to the Lord in confession.
3. Praise God that there is grace for us! Though we may fail, raising the next generation is not up to us. Though we have a calling and responsibility to leave a legacy, it is God who is at work. Take some time to remember the gospel that saves us from our sinful preoccupations. Even our failure to take this call to heart is covered by the cross. Thank Him for Christ’s work on your behalf.
4. How might you respond in a new way to this call of God to leave a legacy to the next generation? Consider these possibilities or identify your own response.
- Do you need to make a decisive choice this day who you will serve (Josh. 24:15)?
- Are there ways you want to love the Lord with all your heart, soul, and mind? What might you need to change in your own attitudes or habits? What might you need to start doing personally?
- Is there an area you need to trust the Lord with first, not only after you have exhausted all other possibilities? Take some time to surrender this in prayer before Him.
- Do you need to intentionally lead your family in the ways of the Lord? What are some informal opportunities you can remember the gospel in your everyday life? How might you influence others for Christ in how you read the Bible, personally or with them? How might you bring the Word and/or prayer more regularly into the ordinary activities of life?
- How might you serve the church by being a partner to parents who seek to disciple their children? How might you as a parent partner with the church and youth ministry to disciple your children together?
5. Spend some time thanking God for this privilege and calling to leave a legacy for Him. Pray for patience in this slow change process, trust in His faithfulness to use our efforts, and perseverance on our part to keep serving him in what may feel mundane or repetitive.
