Pastor Kim points out that our attempts to satisfy our desire for purpose, significance, and worth in a restlessness rooted in our unrighteousness. For some of us, this can be why we feel so tired and exhausted, because we are committed to run a race that is impossible to win.
1. Deep inside, what are you striving for? What do you do to gain acceptance, approval, or affirmation from others through your work (e.g. studies, job), relationships (e.g. friendships, parenting), or aspirations (e.g. self-fulfillment, personal goals)?
Whose standard of righteousness are you trying to satisfy? How do you hope these will make you “right”?
2. Much of this sermon focuses on three truths that allow our hearts to rest in Christ who is enough for us.
- Can you put in your own words how we can have faith that Christ’s past work on the cross is enough for us? Explain how His death satisfies God’s standard of righteousness, bears God’s wrath in our place, and credits us with His righteousness. How does believing this is true make a difference in understanding the futility of our efforts to gain our own righteousness?
- While we desire resurrection power, we’re not as keen on suffering and loss that comes with it. What might you need to let go of or die to so that you might take hold of Christ today?
- How does the promise that God will be faithful to raise you up reframe how you see your sufferings today? How does knowing the ending help you find rest in your soul?
3. Spend time in prayer, thanking God for Christ, that you are now found in Him. Confess the ways you have restlessly tried to pursue your own righteousness. Recount your blessings through Christ and ask Him for His help to rest in these truths.
