Welcome to Sunday Fuel! This series of questions is designed to assist your personal reflection and fellowship with others about the sermon from this past Sunday.
- If people were to look at your life, what might they conclude about what it means to live as a Christian?
- In what ways do you want to live autonomously from God? What areas of your life do you push against God’s boundaries? In your “freedom” from God’s rule in your life, how are you foolishly substituting other lesser masters in His place? How is your “freedom” from his rule actually enslaving you?
- In what ways does legalism and rule-keeping keep you enslaved instead of living in the freedom that Christ has made possible for us? In what ways are you still living as if you were still enslaved to the law, uncertain about your standing with God? How have you enslaved yourself all over again under these rules or self-made laws?
- Realize that when we yoke ourselves to anything other than Christ, we are functionally telling Him that we do not think He is enough for us. Instead, we will tie ourselves to other things or people to provide that for us. How might that look in your life? Ponder this, and if needed, confess your lack of faith. Ask God to help you hear the beautiful song of freedom He sings instead.
- Pastor Francis defines freedom in Christ as “enjoying God and loving others without earning because Christ is enough.” Consider the beliefs and idolatry that enslaves you in light of the better freedom that Christ offers. How might your freedom in Christ bring you rest from this slavery and burden to earn your justification and prove your value and worth? How might this free you to enjoy God and love others? What would that look like?
- Ironically, one way we can start living in freedom is to stand firm—in God’s Word and alongside other believers.
- Instead of yoking yourself to lesser things, will you yoke yourself to Christ as your sure companion (Matt. 11:28-30)?
- Skim through Galatians: what are some verses that can help anchor your identity and your thoughts in Christ so you can stand firm in the truth?
- Who are some people in your life that you can share your struggles with, who will walk with you, and speak truth to you in your moments of weakness and temptation to resort back to the enslavement of self and law?
