Kim’s Links: The Fear of the Lord and Humility

Brothers and Sisters,

I hope you are well. In light of this last week’s message I wanted to offer some resources on growing in humility and the fear of the Lord, with the end goal of seeking the approval of God over the approval of man.

Whom Shall You Fear?

This first one, by Kevin DeYoung is a simple encouragement about the focus of fearing God,

Proud Spirits and Humble Hearts (PDF)

This link has a helpful comparison showing the difference between pride and humility (I thought it would be a helpful tool to teach your children as well).

Humility: True Greatness

The book I most recommend on humility is CJ Mahaney’s Humility: True Greatness  Here is a study guide that you can use to get even more from your readings.  http://www.andrewfullercenter.org/books-papers/study-guides/

Embracing Obscurity: Becoming Nothing in Light of God’s Everything

Here is one I plan on reading during my sabbatical (I have heard good things)

Here are two more excellent books, both by Ed Welch.

Running Scared: Fear, worry, and the God of rest

When People are Big and God is Small

Both this and the book above are excellent resources on the topic of people-pleasing.

Lastly, a couple of testimonies of men whose faithfulness didn’t necessarily draw big crowds or the approval of men, but they did live faithfully for the approval of God.

True Greatness Never Goes Viral

That’s the funny thing about true, biblical greatness. Biblical greatness almost never goes viral, because biblical greatness almost always involves doing things no one ever sees.”

Memoirs of an Ordinary Pastor

(the quote from the close of the book encouraged my heart to be faithful).

I pray our humility would increase and that we would live every moment in pursuit of the approval of God.
